Finding Galaxy groups using the 2MRS, graph theory, and virtual reality

Abstract

I present the results of the 2MASS Redshift Survey Galaxy Group Catalog. This is the most complete, whole, sky, flux limited survey to date. Excitingly, the methods and techniques used to construct this catalog made use of a now fully operational visualization laboratory, relying heavily on virtual reality. Using these modern techniques we were able to identify flaws in the well established Friends-of-Friends algorithm and endeavoured to address these flaws by implementing a graph theory based solution.
